About Divanee

A graduate of Columbia University, Miral Sattar is a software engineer, writer, journalist, and entrepreneur. Her labor of love is to write, and to create spaces where women and girls can express themselves without fear of judgment, move to their own rhythms, and build trust and community with each other.

In 2003, in an effort to create space for South Asian women’s voices, Miral founded Divanee. Currently, she serves as Divanee’s Editor-in-Chief, and writes about desi artists, social pressure within desi culture on women, violence against women, and the American war on terrorism. She has written for Jane Magazine, Shaadi Style and various publications. She has been featured on Chicago Public Radio, WBAI in New York City, PTV, GEO, the New York Times, Glamour Magazine, Good Morning America, and Gotham Magazine. She has participated in gatherings across the country on issues related to South Asian American experiences, including the 2005 South Asian Awareness Network conference, and the 2004 Indus Women Leaders. She speaks formally and informally about South Asians and the media, and issues that confront South Asian women.
